Ghana 2007 Day 5 Tuesday 13th March 2007 Last night we had to sleep without the use of the fans in our rooms. The fires from the day before had got a power line. We made sure we had torches and bottles of water as we were worried about dehydrating during the night. As it happened the night seemed to be cooler and the only one that really suffered was Phil Eyster who likes to be in sub zero temperatures. We were worried that our batteries wouldn’t last on the amplifier we use for the schools today as due to the lack of power we had been unable to charge them properly. We did three schools which we managed to link into just two assemblies as two of them were next door to each other. The children made me feel very emotional, this area is very poor and a lot of them have never seen a white person before and may never again. They surrounded us and all wanted to touch our skin to see if it felt the same as theirs, and then they sang their hearts out, wanting so to please us by singing their school song. We visited the clinics briefly, I have never seen so many people all so desperate to see the doctor that they broke the lock on the door and had to be physically held back. The four doctors here saw over two hundred people between them, then the rest had to be turned away. They are doing clinics in different villages every day this week. Tonight we have men outside mending a blocked sewer pipe ....... nice ...... I’ll leave the rest to your imagination! J Friday 9th Saturday 10th Sunday 11th Monday 12th |
